How should the morning start? The falls on foot
Begin with the guided falls tour on the Zambian side. A good guide sequences the viewpoints against the crowds and the spray, and frames how the Zambezi carved the gorge you will spend the rest of the day above. The tour is quoted individually — request a rate — and we schedule it early, when the light is soft and the paths are quiet.
Season changes the character of the walk. In the high-water months, roughly February to July, bring a sense of humour about the spray — the Smoke that Thunders earns its name at close range. From about August the river drops, more of the rock face shows, and Livingstone Island opens for Devil’s Pool. Shoes with grip earn their keep at the closest viewpoints either way.
Is Devil’s Pool worth the midday slot?
In season, emphatically yes. Devil’s Pool sits on the lip of the falls at Livingstone Island, reached only with Green Safaris, who run five sittings a day for a maximum of 24 guests each: Breezers at 07:30, 09:00 and 10:30 from $159 per person, the Lunch sitting at 12:30 from $209 and High Tea at 15:30 from $199. The season follows low water, roughly mid-August to late December or early January; outside it, Angel’s Pool takes over. Reserve the Devil’s Pool Experience as far ahead as your dates allow.
If your dates miss the season, Angel’s Pool keeps the island experience open, and the aerial options below put the falls beneath you instead — nobody leaves Livingstone without seeing Mosi-oa-Tunya properly.
What is the Flight of Angels?
The Flight of Angels is the classic aerial pass over the falls. Batoka Sky flies microlights from Maramba Aerodrome — a roughly 15-minute falls flight, or around 30 minutes adding the gorge and the upstream river. Personal cameras are not permitted in-flight; a wing-mounted camera records your run and the photos are available to buy after landing. Seats are quoted on request through Livingstone’s Adventure.
