Devil's Pool at Victoria Falls: Season, Prices and How to Book

Devil’s Pool Experience

Starting from $159 per personHalf dayBook This Experience

The Devil’s Pool Experience is a guided swim to a natural rock pool on the very lip of Victoria Falls — run from Livingstone Island, in season, with sittings from $159 per person.

There is nowhere else on Earth quite like it: a pool at the edge of a 108-metre waterfall, on the crest of a curtain of water 1,708 metres wide. When the Zambezi drops low enough, guides walk and swim you out to it, and you lie against the rock lip with the Falls thundering an arm’s length away.

Access is tightly held. The island and the pool are run exclusively by Green Safaris of Tongabezi, and every visit is guided — this is not a swim you improvise. POTUS secures your sitting, arranges your transfers and briefs you honestly on conditions before you commit.

How do the sittings work?

Livingstone Island runs five sittings a day in season, each capped at 24 guests, each built around refreshments on the island and the guided visit to the pool itself. The boat ride out, the island and the swim together make one of the great half-days in African travel.

  • Morning Breezer — 07:30, from $159
  • Morning Breezer — 09:00, from $159
  • Morning Breezer — 10:30, from $159
  • Lunch sitting — 12:30, from $209
  • High Tea sitting — 15:30, from $199

The early Breezers suit photographers and cool-morning swimmers; the Lunch and High Tea sittings wrap the swim inside a longer, more indulgent island visit. All five sell out in peak weeks, so date flexibility is your friend.

How much does Devil’s Pool cost?

Sittings start from $159 per person for a Morning Breezer, from $199 for High Tea and from $209 for the Lunch sitting. Rates are confirmed at booking and subject to operator availability, and your personalised proforma always comes before payment — bank transfer, mobile money or POS, never online card capture.

When can you swim?

The season is set by the river, not the diary — typically from about mid-August to late December or early January, whenever water levels make the pool safe. Outside that window the crossing closes, and in marginal weeks the operator decides day by day.

When Devil’s Pool is shut, Angel’s Pool on the same island is the alternative — a different perch on the same astonishing edge. You can check the operator’s current season notes at livingstoneisland.com, or simply ask us; we track conditions week by week.

Is it as dangerous as it looks?

It looks outrageous — that is the point — and it is run with complete seriousness. Guides lead every step of the route, position every guest at the lip, and call the day off when the river says so; the five-sitting, 24-guest structure exists precisely to keep the experience controlled.

You will need to be a reasonably confident swimmer and honest about it. Tell us your party’s ages and swimming comfort when you enquire and we will place you on the sitting that fits — or steer you to Angel’s Pool if that is the better call.

There is one queue in world travel we will always defend — the one for the lip of Victoria Falls.

POTUS Rentals & Tours

Every guest we have sent out has come back with the same face: half disbelief, half delight. It is the single most requested photograph in Livingstone, and it is better in person.

When is Devil’s Pool open?

Devil’s Pool is entirely seasonal, because it only exists when the Zambezi drops far enough to tame the current at the lip of the falls. The pool typically opens from around mid-August and runs to late December or early January, water levels permitting — outside that window the operator offers Angel’s Pool, a safer rock pool a little further from the edge. Access is exclusive to Livingstone Island, run by Green Safaris, and numbers are strictly capped at 24 guests per sitting.

There are five sittings a day: three morning Breezers at 07:30, 09:00 and 10:30, a Lunch sitting at 12:30 and a High Tea at 15:30, priced from $159, $209 and $199 respectively. Because the season is short and the seats are few, POTUS books early and tracks the water levels for you — if the pool is closed on your dates, we tell you before you travel and arrange Angel’s Pool or a guided falls tour instead.

Every sitting is guided from Livingstone Island by seasoned staff, and the swim to the pool’s edge is short and closely supervised. Bring a swimsuit, a towel and a waterproof bag for your phone; the operator provides the rest. Because access is by boat transfer to the island, POTUS confirms the exact departure time with your booking and collects you from your hotel in good time — the mornings are cooler and the light is best for photographs.

Season slots are finite — 24 guests a sitting, five sittings a day — so early booking matters more here than anywhere else we sell.
