What the day looks like
We collect you from your Livingstone hotel in the morning and drive you to the gorge for registration, kitting and the safety briefing. The classic full-day trip runs rapids 1 to 25; the half-day option covers rapids 1 to 10 and has you back in town by early afternoon. Either way, the day ends with the famous climb out of the gorge and a cold drink at the top.

Expect to be on the water for several hours, to get properly soaked, and to talk about it for years. Kit for the day — helmet, life jacket, paddle — is provided by the operator; you simply bring swimwear, secure footwear and sunscreen.
When is the best time to raft?
The prime low-water season runs from roughly August to December, when the river drops and all 25 rapids open at their most technical. The river typically closes from about April to July, when the Zambezi is in peak flood and the gorge is unsafe to run. Between those windows, operators adjust the launch point day by day to match the water level.

How much does it cost?
Rafting on the Zambezi is quoted per trip rather than off a fixed list, because rates vary with the season, the section of river open and the operator running that day. Send us your dates and group size and we will return a personalised proforma quotation, usually the same day. All rates are confirmed at booking; subject to operator availability.
Your quotation covers the rafting itself plus our return hotel transfers, so there are no surprise costs on the day. Payment is by bank transfer, mobile money or POS against the proforma invoice — we never ask for card details online.
Who can take part?
You do not need rafting experience — the guides teach you everything at the morning briefing — but you should be a confident swimmer and reasonably fit, as the walk out of the gorge is steep. Trips run with a minimum of 2 guests, and we regularly arrange rafts for wedding parties, corporate teams and delegations of 20 or more. When can you raft the Zambezi?
The Batoka Gorge has two distinct rafting seasons. Low water, roughly August to December or January, is the prime and most technical period, when the full run of rapids one to twenty-five is open and the Zambezi delivers what guidebooks call the highest concentration of grade four and five rapids anywhere in the world. High water, around January to July, shortens the runnable section and raises the intensity; at peak flood, usually April to July, the river is often closed altogether for safety.
